As much as we would like to wish the common cold away, the illness will inevitably catch up to us at some time in our lives. While we can count on being sick for a week or two, it doesn’t mean we have to suffer during our sickness.  Research has found that there are a few home remedies one can consider that have been found useful in easing its symptoms.

Rest

The body’s number one defense against the common cold. Your body needs rest to revive and recharge itself.

Remain Hydrated

Liquids such as warm lemon water, juice, and hot tea with honey, have been found useful in helping to loosen the congestion that builds up on the walls of the throat, nose, etc. and helps prevent dehydration. This is not the time, however, to drink coffee and soda since they tend to make dehydration worse.

Fight Congestion

Saline nasal drops and sprays can help loosen the mucus and relieve the swelling that occurs in the nasal passages.  For infants and younger children, try putting a few saline drops in one nostril at a time and gently suctioning the nose with a bulb syringe to relieve congestion.

Introduce Moisture into the Air

A cool mist vaporizer or humidifier works wonders in adding moisture into a room which helps loosen congestion for most individuals. Remember to change the water daily and clean the system based on the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure the machine continues to function correctly. Steam is not suggested because it may cause burns to anyone who comes in contact with it.

Relieve Pain

Pain relief medication is a quick and effective method when used in the correct dosage. For children 6 months or younger, the only suggested pain reliever is acetaminophen. For children older than 6 months, acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be given. The correct dosage may be requested from the child’s health care provider or by reading the dosing directions on the back label of the medication. Adults may take acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, etc.), or aspirin.
